Meta Business Agent: what it is, what it does, and how to set one up in the UK
Meta’s Business Agent is an AI assistant that talks to your customers on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Switching it on is easy. Making it genuinely useful for a small business is the part most people get wrong. Here is the plain-English guide.

What is a Meta Business Agent?
A Meta Business Agent is an AI agent that answers customer messages on your business’s WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram accounts. Meta has been rolling it out through 2026 as part of its push into what it calls the “agentic economy”: AI that does not just chat, but gets things done for the customer.
Instead of an old-style chatbot with fixed buttons and dead ends, a Business Agent understands normal messages (“can you do Thursday after 4?”), answers from your business information, and can take the next step: recommending a service, booking a slot, qualifying a lead, or handing the conversation to a person.
According to Meta’s own 2026 report on the agentic economy, more than a million businesses already use Business Agent every week. The opportunity for UK small businesses is simple: your customers already message you, and most of them get a slow reply or none at all.
What can a Business Agent do for a small business?
- Reply instantly, 24/7: every enquiry gets an answer in seconds, including evenings and weekends.
- Answer the everyday questions: prices, opening hours, areas covered, parking, what to bring.
- Qualify leads: ask the questions you would ask (what, where, when, budget, a photo) before you get involved.
- Book appointments: offer real free slots and confirm the booking.
- Follow up: reminders before appointments, chasing quotes that went quiet, asking happy customers for a Google review.
- Hand over to a human: anything unusual, sensitive or high-value comes to you with a summary.

Business Agent vs a normal chatbot
| Old-style chatbot | Business Agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Understands | Button presses and keywords | Normal messages, typos, voice-note style chat |
| Knows | A fixed script | Your services, prices, hours and FAQs |
| Can do | Point to a web page | Book, qualify, follow up, hand over |
| Feels like | A phone menu | A helpful member of staff |
Why most Business Agents disappoint
Meta makes an agent easy to switch on, and that is exactly the trap. Industry research quoted in Meta’s report found that while around three in four businesses have adopted AI agents, only around 15% say they are seeing a real return. The gap is almost always the same three things:
- It is not trained on the business. A generic agent gives generic answers. It needs your real prices, areas, policies and tone of voice.
- It is not connected to anything. An agent that cannot see your diary cannot book. One that cannot pass leads to you cannot sell.
- Nobody looks after it. Prices change, new questions come in, and nobody updates the agent, so it slowly gets worse.
How to set up a Meta Business Agent in the UK
There are two routes.
Route 1: do it yourself
If you are comfortable with Meta Business Suite, you can enable the AI features Meta offers inside WhatsApp Business and your Meta business tools, add your business information, and test it. Expect to spend a few evenings getting the answers right, and to check it every week.
Route 2: done for you
A setup provider connects your number to the official WhatsApp Business Platform, trains the agent on your business, links it to your calendar and lead handling, tests it with real questions, and keeps it up to date. This is what we do. Most businesses are live within 48 hours and never have to touch the technical side.
You keep your number. The agent runs on your existing business WhatsApp number or a new one, and customers are always told they are chatting with your assistant.
How much does a Meta Business Agent cost?
There are two separate costs:
- Meta’s WhatsApp fees. Replying to customers who message you first is free. Messages you start (like reminders and offers) are charged per message by Meta, typically a few pence each in the UK. See our WhatsApp Business pricing guide for the detail.
- Setup and management. Done-for-you plans with us start from £37 a month, with no long contract.
Which businesses get the most out of it?
Anyone who gets repetitive enquiries by message: trades (plumbers, electricians, roofers), salons and barbers, clinics and dentists, estate and letting agents, restaurants and takeaways, driving instructors, mobile services, and local shops. If you regularly think “I’ll reply to that later”, you will see the difference in the first week.
Frequently asked questions
Is Meta Business Agent free?
Replying to customers who message you first on WhatsApp is free under Meta’s pricing. Messages you send first (reminders, offers) are charged per message by Meta. Setup and management by a provider is separate; our plans start from £37 a month.
Does a Business Agent work on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger?
Yes. Meta’s Business Agent is designed for its messaging apps. Most UK small businesses start on WhatsApp because that is where their customers already message them.
Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number?
Usually yes. Your number can be connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform, and in many cases you can keep using the WhatsApp Business app alongside it.
What happens when the agent cannot answer?
It hands the conversation to you with a short summary of who the customer is and what they need, rather than guessing.
Are you part of Meta?
No. Business Agents is an independent UK setup provider that builds on Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Meta.
