The WhatsApp Business API in the UK: how to get it and what to do with it
“WhatsApp API” sounds like something only developers need. In reality it is just the grown-up version of WhatsApp Business, the one that lets an AI agent answer, book and follow up for you. Here is how UK businesses get access.

What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business API, officially the WhatsApp Business Platform, is Meta’s way for businesses to connect WhatsApp to software: AI agents, CRMs, booking systems and automated messages. Meta now provides it as the Cloud API, which means Meta hosts it and you do not need your own servers.
The free WhatsApp Business app is designed for a person on a phone. The API is designed for a business that wants WhatsApp to work while nobody is holding the phone.
What you need to get access
- A Meta Business account (business.facebook.com), ideally verified.
- A phone number that can receive a verification code by SMS or call. It can be a new number or, in many cases, your existing WhatsApp Business number.
- A display name that matches your business; Meta reviews it.
- A payment method in Meta for any messages you start.
- Something to connect it to: an AI agent, an inbox, or your own code.
Three ways to get the API
| Route | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Build it yourself on the Cloud API | Businesses with a developer | Webhooks, templates, token management, ongoing maintenance |
| Self-serve platform or inbox tool | Teams who want a shared inbox | Monthly seat fees, message mark-ups, you still configure everything |
| Done-for-you provider | Small businesses who want results, not a project | Check it includes training the AI and ongoing management |
How setup works with us
- Connect: you log in with Facebook and choose or add your number through Meta’s official signup. Your number and your data stay in your business account.
- Train: we build your agent from your website, price list and a short questionnaire.
- Test: we run it through the questions your customers really ask.
- Go live: usually within 48 hours, then we keep it updated.
What UK businesses use the API for
- An AI agent that answers enquiries 24/7
- Appointment booking, confirmations and reminders
- “On our way” and “job done” updates
- Review requests after a job
- Opt-in offers and newsletters to past customers
The rules worth knowing
- The 24-hour window: you can reply freely for 24 hours after a customer’s last message. Outside that, you must use a pre-approved message template.
- Opt-in: only message people who have agreed to hear from you, and always honour “STOP”.
- Quality rating: if lots of people block or report you, Meta limits your number. Relevant, expected messages keep you safe.

Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
Access to the Cloud API is free from Meta. You pay Meta per message for certain messages you start (marketing, utility, authentication). Replies to customers within 24 hours of their message are free.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number with the API?
Often yes. Meta supports connecting existing WhatsApp Business numbers, and in many cases you can keep using the Business app on the same number. A number used on personal WhatsApp needs moving first.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp API?
Not if you use a provider. A done-for-you provider handles the connection, templates and AI setup for you.
What is the WhatsApp Cloud API?
It is the version of the WhatsApp Business Platform hosted by Meta. It is how businesses and providers connect WhatsApp to software today.
