WhatsApp Business pricing in the UK (2026): what you actually pay
WhatsApp Business can cost nothing, or it can cost a few pence per message, or it can come bundled in a monthly plan. The pricing pages make it sound complicated. It isn’t. Here is what a UK small business actually pays.

WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API
There are two different products with “WhatsApp Business” in the name:
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business Platform (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free to receive and reply; pay per message you start |
| Who uses it | One phone, a few devices | Businesses automating or scaling messaging |
| AI agents and automation | Basic auto-replies only | Full AI agents, bookings, integrations |
| Bulk and scheduled messages | Limited broadcast lists | Approved templates at scale |
If all you need is a greeting and an away message, the free app is fine (see our guide to automated WhatsApp messages). The moment you want an AI agent answering properly, booking appointments or sending reminders, you need the API, which Meta calls the WhatsApp Business Platform.
How Meta charges for WhatsApp messages
Since mid-2025 Meta charges per message, and only for certain types of message:
- Customer messages you first: your replies are free for 24 hours from their last message. This is where most small-business conversations happen, so most of your chat costs nothing.
- Marketing messages (offers, newsletters, “we have a slot free today”) are charged per message. In the UK this is typically in the region of 3 to 5p each.
- Utility messages (appointment reminders, booking confirmations, “on our way”) are cheaper, typically a penny or two, and free when sent inside an open 24-hour conversation.
- Authentication messages (one-time passcodes) are charged at a low per-message rate.
Meta sets and updates these rates by country, so treat the figures above as a guide and check Meta’s current rate card before budgeting.
Realistic monthly costs for a UK small business
| Business | Typical use | Meta fees / month |
|---|---|---|
| Plumber or electrician | 60 enquiries answered, 40 reminders | Around £0 to £1 |
| Salon or barber | 200 bookings with reminders, 1 monthly offer to 300 clients | Around £10 to £15 |
| Estate or letting agent | 150 enquiries, viewing reminders, weekly new-listings message to 200 | Around £30 to £40 |
In other words, for most small businesses the Meta fees are small. The real cost is setting it up properly and keeping it working, which is why most businesses use a provider.
What a WhatsApp provider charges on top
To use the API you either build on it yourself (developer time) or use a provider. Providers range from self-serve inbox tools at £50 to £300 a month to full done-for-you services. Watch for:
- A mark-up on Meta’s per-message fees
- Long minimum contracts
- “Setup fees” that do not include training the AI on your business
Our done-for-you Business Agent plans start from £37 a month, with setup, training and ongoing management included, and no long contract.
How to keep WhatsApp costs low
- Let customers start the chat. Put a WhatsApp button on your website, Google profile and social pages; those conversations are free to reply to.
- Send reminders while the conversation is open where possible.
- Send marketing messages to people who want them, segmented, rather than blasting everyone.
